Illinois Chrysler plant offers worker buyouts

Associated Press
BELVIDERE, Ill. -- Chrysler is offering buyouts to all 2,600 employees at its northern Illinois assembly plant.

Spokesman Ed Saenz says offers are going out to 2,400 union workers and 200 administrative staff in Belvidere. He declined to say if Chrysler had a target for the number of employees it hopes will take the "voluntary separation packages."

The offers come amid an industrywide slump.

Chrysler's U.S. sales were down 35 percent in October compared to last year.

At the start of 2008, more than 3,700 people worked at the Belvidere plant. Chrysler reduced the work force by offering similar buyouts in spring. The plant also eliminated a third shift, cutting more than 1,000 workers.
